Carving out a vocation in the world of fired arts can be hard and can ware on someone who has not armed themselves with solid personal goals as well as a sound business plan. Even though we live in a Country that welcomes new ideas and creative sources of income there are plenty of naysayers out there that can plant seeds of doubt. How do we stave off limiting beliefs because reality can catch up to your beliefs? Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t your probably right.
We’re going to cover three main limits to your success as an artist: Doubt, Resources, Piers
Doubt Is A Goal Toxin
Doubt is not just that nagging feeling that you forgot to pack something just as your plane pulls away from the gate. Doubt is the kind of deep seeded fear that keeps you from ever buying the plane ticket. Here are a few antidots to this common toxin:
- Start believing you can. Breaking the sound barrier, the 4-minute mile, and hundreds of other amazing human accomplishments will all first believed to be impossible.
- Stop thinking in black and white. This is the idea that you fail when perfection isn’t reached.
- Stop getting on the scale and start counting calories. We often set goals without measuring the right things.
- Get your hopes up. Too many are so worried about getting their hopes dashed they stop hoping at all.
A Lack May Be Your Gain
If you think that all your resources must be met before you get started you probably never begin. A lack of resources can often spur on resourcefulness. It has never been easier to find items you need with little to now money. (Letgo, Ebay, Craigslist, offerup) The barter system has severed me well over the years.
Choose Your Piers
This doesn’t mean anything is wrong with the piers you have. Certainly, I am not wanting to encourage the blame game here. Blamers aren’t changers. Look for a group on a similar journey. Join a mastermind group or create one. Join a guild. If your wanting to run your first 5K a runner club can make all the difference in the world. You’ll even find out that the journey yielded far richer experiences that the race itself.
Start believing that you can and watch your reality catch up.
