The 1000 Words You Can’t Speak
Taking pictures have never been easier. Point and click are the only skills necessary to take brilliant pictures in almost any environment and any lighting, right? If that’s true why are we still captivated by those certain shots and what is it about them that draws us in and holds our attention? The old, adage, a picture is worth a thousand words is true. So, what are your pictures saying? Many of mine are saying, “that looks like a fun vacation”. There are certainly many pictures that we take for one purpose, capturing memories. These are not professional pictures for commercial adds. They are triggers that jar our memory and take us back to that moment.
If you are trying to get into a juried art show, build your platform on the web, or create brochures that lure customers in then great pictures is your starting point. Today we have with us in studio a professional photographer, Amy Dobson.

We want to talk about 3 things that will make all the difference.
What Versus Why
“What” When your submitting pictures for entry into a juried art show it’s all about the what, and your what needs to be perfectly clear. Jurors are looking for clear, focused, unfiltered, objects that portray the work in reality. Amy how do you get great pictures without a lot of post editing, and if you have to post edit, how do you keep the object as close to a realistic representation as possible? What are some common mistakes armatures make in this area?
“Why” Great marketers would say a consumer acts on the “why” not on the “what”. A fired artist using outlets like Etsy, and social media might use this strategy by combining their work in images that portray their function or their brilliance as centerpiece in the home. How do we get those ethereal images that spark desire for our work?
Focus
With the focus on what kind of images you need to take, can you talk to us about the ways to go about doing that?
- Equipment
- Backgrounds
- Consistency
- Lighting
- Shadows and glares (how to get ride of them before or after shooting)
- Editing
Cost
The thought of hiring some professional photographer congers up thoughts of my nephews wedding, $3000. But, there are so many logistics to a wedding and all the post shoot editing to complete an album. Getting good pictures of your wares may be less expensive that you think and will be money well spent.
